Star India Requests Discount From BCCI Under Present Agreement; Byju's Seeks Recoup Bank Guarantee

The BCCI will get a bank guarantee payment of about Rs 140 crore, and the remaining amount of about Rs 160 crore would be paid in installments

Star India, the media rights holder for India's domestic season, has requested a Rs 130 crore decrease on the current agreement, while jersey sponsor BYJU's, which is leaving, wants the board to honour the current arrangement by cashing in a bank guarantee worth approximately Rs 140 crore.

During Monday's emergency meeting of the Apex Council, the BCCI high brass discussed the two topics for more than an hour. It was an online meeting.

BYJU's informed the BCCI in November that it intended to stop serving as the Indian cricket team's jersey sponsor. However, the board requested that BYJU's remain until at least March 2023.

To make up for this, BYJU renewed its jersey sponsorship deal with the BCCI in June, for an estimated 35 million USD, through November 2023.

The BCCI will get a bank guarantee payment of about Rs 140 crore, and the remaining amount of about Rs 160 crore would be paid in installments.

The meeting also made public the fact that Star, which had paid Rs 6138.1 for the 2018–2023 domestic and international cricket rights in India, has requested a roughly Rs 130 crore decrease in the current agreement. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, some of the matches during the contract time had to be rescheduled.

The modification takes place as the BCCI prepares to put media rights up for auction for the future five-year cycle when the current arrangement expires in March. The BCCI anticipates another bonanza after the media rights for the IPL generated an incredible Rs 48,390 crore in revenue.
